The UWI Mona is saddened by the passing of Lascelles Bancroft Smith

"A real gentleman of the old-fashioned kind…  He was kind, thoughtful and helpful to me on the few occasions I needed to call upon him for "accounting"  advice.  He was also sociable. I never worked directly with him, but I heard NO complaints about him as "a boss" or supervisor.”

Joy Pilgrim

The UWI mourns the passing of another member of our community, retired University Bursar, Lascelles Bancroft Smith.

Lascelles B. Smith was born on January 15, 1926 and transitioned on April 13, 2020.

He trained as an accountant earning his ACCS in 1949 and his AACCA in 1955. He was also a Fellow at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Jamaica and a Registered Public Accountant.

In his professional life, he served as an accountant with Turk Island Importers Ltd in the Turks and Caicos Islands in 1949 and later served in the same capacity at the Jamaica Agricultural Society.

He joined the UWI family in May 1965 as an accountant; four years later (1969) he was promoted to senior accountant. Making his mark on the department and his peers at the University’s Mona Campus, he was described by one former colleague as having the most infectious laugh.

He later earned a promotion to Acting Bursar then Bursar in 1974. Mr Smith was appointed the University Bursar in 1979 and served in that capacity until his retirement in (June) 1993.

As the UWI community mourns his passing, our thoughts and prayers are with his family and colleagues at this difficult time.
