UWI Mona Faculty of Engineering retains ABET Accreditation for Electronics Engineering Program

The Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering offered by the Faculty of Engineering (FoE) at The University of the West Indies Mona, has retained its full accreditation by ABET. This follows program evaluations conducted during the 2019-2020 accreditation cycle by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET.

ABET is the premier global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology. ABET currently accredits 4,144 programs in 812 colleges and universities across 32 countries.  

ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies, and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.

Graduate Marketability

Commenting on the accreditation renewal, Dean of the Faculty, Dr Adrian Lawrence, stated that the US-based ABET accreditation, gives the Mona Engineering graduate global appeal, he stated that “the renewal affirms the high quality of the Faculty’s programs. We remain committed to produce graduates who are disruptive innovators to be “game changers” for economic expansion and sustainable development for the Caribbean Region.”

What ABET accreditation means for FoE

Dr Lawrence further noted “ABET accreditation assures our constituents that the UWI Mona Faculty of Engineering programs are subject to a systematic process of continuous improvement and therefore meet the quality standards of the profession for which our graduates are being prepared” which he concludes “provides a natural alignment with the University mission, to advance learning, create knowledge and foster innovation for the positive transformation of the Caribbean and the world. ”

Duration and Review

The BSc, Electronics Engineering program is accredited up to September 30, 2024 and will be eligible for a reaccreditation review in the ABET 2023-2024 accreditation cycle.  The Faculty will submit a Self-Study Report to ABET July 2023. This submission will also include a request for the review of the Civil Engineering and Electrical Power Engineering programs towards accreditation.

ABET Criteria

Developed by technical professionals from ABET’s member societies, ABET criteria focus on what students experience and learn. ABET accreditation reviews look at program curricula, faculty, facilities, and institutional support and are conducted by teams of highly skilled professionals from industry, academia, and government - with expertise in the ABET disciplines.
