Dr. Loretta Sweet Jemmott
Dr. Loretta Sweet Jemmott, FAAN, RN, van Ameringen Professor in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing, Director of the Center for Urban Health Research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, and Co-Chair of the University of Pennsylvania’s Centre for AIDS Research Behaviour and Social Science Research Core, will visit the Department of Advanced Nursing Education (DANE), UWI, August 30-31, 2004. She leads a team of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing to establish a collaborative relationship with DANE regarding a Jamaican adolescent HIV health promotion research project. Dr. Jemmott is a foremost researcher in the field of HIV/AIDS prevention among African American adolescents in the USA attracting to date $74 million in federal funding for her work. Her reputation has achieved international proportions, and she was recently invited to South Africa to help impact HIV/AIDS in Africa.
Over the past 10 years, Dr. Jemmott has been involved in extensive outcome-based, theory driven, and culturally competent National Institutes of Health-funded research, designing and evaluating interventions to reduce HIV risk-associated sexual behaviours among adolescents and women.
A multi-disciplinary team from the UWI and the Ministry of Health will be participating in this initial meeting. Dr. Beverly Bonaparte, RN, ANP, FAAN, Fulbright Fellow at DANE for the academic year 2004-2005, who was instrumental in the initiation of this collaboration, is also a member of the visiting research team.
