Highpoints of Principal’s Address
Classes Resume Sept. 20
• Classes at the UWI, Mona Campus will resume on Monday, September 20, 2004. Registration activities will also resume at that time and continue through to Friday, September 24.
• Students who normally reside on campus are advised that they should return to the Halls of Residence on Sunday, September 19.
• Staff and students, including those who reside on campus, are advised that they should bring their own drinking water until the supply from the National Water Commission returns to normal.
• Faculty Deans will meet with Heads of Departments and other staff to determine how best to ensure that students receive instruction to compensate for the week and a half which has been lost due to the hurricane.
Some Damage to Infrastructure
The Campus is undertaking comprehensive investigations to determine the extent of the damage to infrastructure and other systems. Preliminary assessments indicate that there has been some structural and water damage to a few buildings:
• The Main Library suffered extensive water damage and is now closed. The Library will re-open on a phased basis as of Monday, September 20. There will be limited access to the Reserved Book Collection (RBC) and the Reading Room. The Science and Medical Libraries were not affected and will operate normally
• The Personnel Building lost a part of its roof. Staff have been temporarily relocated to the Old Dramatic Theatre
• Sections of the perimeter wall at the Mona Bowl collapsed. Repairs are underway.
• The Bursary, and some of the Faculties, suffered ceiling damage.
Help Desk Established
Staff is asked to report any damage to the Office of Safety and Emergency Management Systems, 6 Gibraltar Hall Road (upstairs the Printery building). This is to ensure that all hurricane-related damage is compiled in one place to facilitate insurance claims and so on.
Public Health Concerns
The Campus is monitoring the safety of food preparation. A team from the Business Development Office and the Sanitation & Grounds Section, Maintenance Services has been inspecting the various food outlets to ensure that standards of hygiene are not compromised. Staff and students are however asked to bring their own drinking water until supplies from the National Water Commission return to normal, and to take precautions to safeguard their own health
UWI’s Outreach
• Members of staff in the Faculty of Medical Sciences have been assisting with an Outreach Centre established at the Bustamante Children’s Hospital to assist those seriously affected by the hurricane.
• Other members of staff associated with the Jamaica Red Cross Society have been visiting affected areas and providing assistance where possible.
Condolences
The Principal expressed sympathy to all who have been personally affected by the effects of the hurricane, in particular to Mr. Leon Hayden, an Office Attendant in the Registry, who lost his sister when a tree collapsed on her house.
