The Faculty of Medical Sciences, The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus will host its 13th Annual Research Conference and Workshop from November 10 to 12, 2004 on the Mona Campus. Chairman of the planning committee, Dr. John Lindo says the annual conference allows researchers in the Faculty to share and explore developments in health research with members of the medical community and the wider community who are important stakeholders in the UWI. He notes that each year the workshop which is an integral part of the event, seeks to focus on a topical issue from a health perspective. This year the focus will be on Violence and Violence Prevention. The conference’s opening ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 10 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. The highlight of the ceremony will be the annual Sir Kenneth Standard Lecture named after the distinguished Caribbean public health pioneer who died in August of this year. The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Rodrigo Guerrero, Coordinator of the Inter American Alliance on Violence Prevention, a medical doctor and former mayor of Cali, Colombia. The programme also includes the launch of the Violence Prevention Alliance –Jamaica Chapter by the Minister of Health, Hon. John Junor.
The conference’s technical sessions on November 11 will be in four sessions: Obstetrics Gynaecology and Child Health; Sickle Cell Disease and Haematology; Laboratory Studies and Infectious Diseases; and Clinical Studies and are aimed at members of the health team including nurses and students.The workshop on Violence and Violence Prevention will take place on Friday, November12 and is being organised in conjunction with the Ministry of Health. Members of the public are invited to attend the workshop which takes place from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.The conference’s technical sessions and the workshop will be held in the Main Medical Lecture Theatre at the University Hospital of the West Indies.
