UWI Graduation Ceremonies

Some 2,730 persons graduated with first degrees from UWI Mona in ceremonies held on Friday and Saturday, November 5 and 6 at the Mona Campus. UWI Chancellor, Sir George Alleyne in his address to the graduates welcomed them into the circle of alumni of the University. He also expressed the hope that some of the current graduates would return at the 100th graduation ceremony and would have fond memories of their stay at Mona that would allow them to be proud of the brand that is connoted by the University of the West Indies. The University also conferred Honorary Degrees on four persons at the ceremonies. They were President of Catalyst Research Corporation in Houston, Texas, Dr. John Ewen, Director of the Mayo Clinic Cancer Centre, Dr. Franklyn G. Prendergast, and noted Botanist, Dr. George Richardson Proctor, who all received the Doctor of Science (DSc) Degree, and Director of Archives in the Ministry of Education and Youth, Bahamas, Dr. Gail Saunders, OBE, who received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD). At the ceremony the Chancellor also announced that for the 2003/2004 academic year 273 candidates were awarded diplomas and certificates and 632 higher degrees were conferred, with 17 of these being PHD’s. Ten candidates who completed the course by distance and obtained first class honors, as well as 11 candidates who, for the first time, completed for the bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy, 5 of them with first class honours were also recognised. 50% of the first degrees were in the first class or upper second category. Over the past ten years, 16,467 persons have graduated from Mona with Bachelor’s Degrees.
