UWI Staff Serve Through Red Cross

Members of the staff of the UWI have been actively involved in giving voluntary service to Jamaica and the Caribbean through the Jamaica Red Cross, a division of the Emergency Services. One such service has been the provision of psychological support to Red Cross volunteers as well as survivors of Hurricane Ivan. The Disaster Mental Health Service of the Jamaica Red Cross, is headed by Dr Angela Gordon Stair, Senior Counsellor at the Health Centre, UWI, Mona. In Jamaica, teams have been working in the Kingston Metropolitan Area, as well as in Portland Cottage in Clarendon. At the request of the International Federation of the Red Cross/Red Crescent Societies, a team headed by Dr. Peter Weller, Counsellor, University Counselling Service in the Health Centre, recently completed a mission to Grenada. The team also included retired UWI lecturer, psychiatrist, Dr Frank Knight. In Grenada they provided training for Red Cross staff and specially selected volunteers who will serve as a core Psycho-social Support Team responding to the needs in the communities and collaborating with relevant entities. Another team of mental health providers, headed by Mrs. Sharon Williams-Brown Counsellor, University Counselling Service, visited the Cayman Islands and provided psychosocial support to the staff and volunteers from the Cayman Red Cross as well as to members of the community in Grand Cayman. Other active volunteers who are also members of staff at Mona are, Mrs. Lita Allen, Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work, Dr. Audrey Pottinger, Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Child Health, and Ms. Elaine Jackson from the Advanced Training and Research in Fertility Management Unit.
