Walter Rodney Lecture
The Institute of Caribbean Studies at the UWI Mona Campus will host the Sixth Walter Rodney Lecture, to be delivered by Professor Verene A. Shepherd on Thursday, November 25, 2004 at the Emancipation Park in New Kingston starting at 6:00 pm. The topic for this year's event is War Memorials & Black Liberation: 'Groundings' with Walter Rodney on History, Heritage and Activism.
The annual lecture is delivered by a distinguished Caribbean personality each year around the anniversary of the "Rodney Riots" of Oct. 16, 1968. Walter Rodney, a Guyanese, graduated from the UWI Mona campus in History, and lectured there before he was excluded from the country in October, 1968 - an exclusion that led to student protest marches and
more generalized protests and demonstrations in Kingston.
