Distinguished Fellow

The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce that former leader of the opposition in Jamaica the Most Honourable Edward Seaga, has taken up the post of Distinguished Fellow in the School for Graduate Studies and Research at its Mona Campus. Mr. Seaga’s appointment is at professorial level, as are several such appointments, for example, the University Librarian and the University Counsel (Legal Unit Director). However, a person so appointed is not to be styled ‘professor’. Conferment of the title of Professor occurs when an individual is either promoted to a professorship or appointed to an established or endowed chair.
Mr. Seaga has had a distinguished career in the national, regional and international political arenas. He has established, encouraged, promoted or introduced several institutions covering a wide range of fields – in agriculture, community development, financial and tax management, human resource training, social and cultural development – which are today ingrained features of modern Jamaican life. The University hopes to draw on Mr. Seaga’s tremendous knowledge and experience for the purposes of teaching, research and outreach services in the area of development studies.
