Members of the public are invited to participate in the Annual Commemoration Celebrations and Alumni Week which take place at the Mona Campus over the period February 17 – 27. The week begins on Friday with a Flag Raising Ceremony and University Parade to highlight the regional nature of the institution. Staff, students and alumni will participate in the parade which will be led by members of the Jamaica Military Band. The Annual Commemoration Service will be held in the University Chapel on Sunday, February 20 at 9:00 a.m. The service will be conducted by Rev. Fr. Orville Shields and Rev. Dr. Burchell Taylor will deliver the sermon. The University Male Voice Choir will be the choir. Another highlight of the week is the Grand Commemoration Concert and Pelican Awards Ceremony which takes place on Sunday, February 20, beginning at 6:00 p.m. The Pelican Award is presented to a graduate of the University who has contributed significantly to the development of the University or has made an outstanding contribution to Jamaica.
For 2005, the award will be presented to Dr. Deanna Ashley, Bevon Morrison and Stephney Ferguson. Dr. Ashley is being recognised for outstanding work in the field of medicine, her efforts having helped to reduce infant mortality, to secure policy changes in how gastroenteritis is managed, and improvements in access to and quality of referral obstetric care across Jamaica. Stephney Ferguson is being recognised for her service to the University community and contribution to public service while Bevon Morrison is receiving her award for excellence in the field of science and technology, especially in environmental recycling.
