UWI Library Seeks to Strengthen Conservation and Preservation Capability
The UWI Library is exposing its bindery staff to modern binding and conservation techniques. In addition, it will undertake an analysis of the Bindery’s workflow, and current binding practices in an effort to re-engineer and reorganize the unit for greater productivity and efficiency.
Consultant, John F. Dean, Preservation and Conservation Librarian at Cornell University Library, who had earlier assisted the Library with its recovery after the water damage caused by Hurricane Ivan, is assisting with the project. His experience in education and training in conservation/binding and the establishment of preservation programmes is extensive.
He holds a Masters Degree from the University of Chicago and the Johns Hopkins University. He has taught at several leading US universities including Cornell University. Since 1987, he has visited many countries working on-site to establish preservation programmes.
While here, Mr. Dean will lead several sessions at a workshop on preservation management for Caribbean librarians, archivists and records managers. This is scheduled for March 9 &10 in the Multifunctional Room, Main Library, UWI. He returns to Cornell University on March 19.
