Mona Campus – Partnerships for Development

The Digicel Foundation is to fund a Chair in Telecommunication Policy and Management to be located at the Mona School of Business. This was announced by Chairman of the Foundation, Mr. Harry Smith, at a reception to honour “Partners of the Mona Campus” on Thursday, April 7 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. Addressing those present, Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Mona Campus Professor the Hon. Kenneth Hall highlighted some of the partnerships the UWI Mona Campus has forged over the years with the private sector, agencies of government, foundations international agencies, alumni and friends through the various scholarships and bursaries, research grants, specifically funded academic programmes and professorships. Professor Hall said that “like all major Universities worldwide, the UWI Mona must increase private funding and support to ensure quality output. He said that “if we are to continue in our tradition of excellence in teaching, research and service, we must be committed to including in our mission, the forging of strategic partnerships with our community with a view to finding solutions to local problems.” Technical Manager of ALCOA Minerals of Jamaica, Wagner Brancalhoni stated that in their ongoing partnership with the UWI they would be collaborating in new areas of research. Also speaking at the reception was Chairman of the Jamaica Racing Commission, Rudolph Muir, who outlined the commission’s historical partnership with the UWI since 1972 and plans to expand the areas of collaboration.
