Inaugural Rex Nettleford Prize in Cultural Studies
The Inaugural Rex Nettleford Prize in Cultural Studies has been awarded to Coordinator of the Graduate Colloquium in Cultural Studies and Administrative Officer in the Graduate Unit of the Faculty of Humanities and Education, Dr. Sonjah Stanley-Niaah. The award is tenable at the UWI and will fund Dr. Stanley-Niaah’s research into the respective roots and comparisons between Jamaican Dancehall and South African Kwaito Music. The fellowship was established in 2004 by the Rhodes Trust in honour of former Rhodes Scholar and UWI Vice Chancellor, Professor Rex Nettleford, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Rhodes scholarship. Professor Nettleford was one of four academics worldwide, who were awarded doctorates by Oxford University to honour former Rhodes Scholars.
