New Professors
The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the appointment of five new professors at its Mona Campus. They are Drs. David Barker, Phyllis Coates-Beckford, Carlos Escoffery, Horace Fletcher and John Lennard. Dr. David Barker serves in the Department of Geography and Geology and has an international reputation as a Caribbean scholar with a broad focus on rural resources and environmental sustainability. He has undertaken research on small hillside farming systems and environmental degradation in the Yallahs valley and on the borders of the Cockpit Country. Dr. Phyllis Coates Beckford is a Plant Pathologist in the Department of Life Sciences. Her research has focused on the management of various diseases of economically important crops in Jamaica. Dr. Carlos Escoffery is in the Department of Pathology. One project in which he has been involved is a detailed analysis of prostate cancer in Jamaica, providing the first such data for the Caribbean and for black men outside of the United States of America.
Professor Horace Fletcher is a well respected academic in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He has made original contributions to important areas of clinical research, particularly in the field of the control of haemorrhage and a variety of gynaecological and obstetric indications. Dr. John Lennard has been appointed Professor of British and American Literature in the Department of Literatures in English. He comes to the UWI from Farleigh Dickinson University
