Biotechnology Training Course for Science Teachers

The Biotechnology Centre in collaboration with the Scientific Research Council, and the Ministry of Education will be hosting a one week training course on “Concepts in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering” geared for High School Science Teachers in Jamaica. The programme was developed and will be delivered by members of staff at the Biotechnology Centre. The objective is to provide an avenue for some science teachers to increase their knowledge and to provide practical hands on laboratory experience in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering.
The sessions will be opened on Monday, July 18 at 8:30 a.m. at the Molecular Biology Seminar Room, (adjacent to the Biotechnology Centre) by Professor Mohammed Ahmad, Director of the Biotechnology Centre, Dr. Audia Barnett, Executive Director of the Scientific Research Council and a representative from the Ministry of Education. Professor Ronald Young, Dean of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, will welcome all the participants and speak on the significance of the course to teachers in the rapid developing field of Biotechnology.
Lecturers and Laboratory Sessions will be held July 18-22 at the same venue from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. each day. The programme is sponsored by the Ministry of Education (Professional Development Unit) and twenty teachers island wide are expected to participate and learn exciting areas of biotechnology and gene cloning.
