UWI hosts Generating Genius programme
A group of twelve-year old British boys teamed up with their Jamaican counterparts last weekend to participate in the first of an annual four-week training programme on the campus of the University of the West Indies, entitled Generating Genius.
The brainchild of Dr. Tony Sewell, Associate Lecturer of Leeds University in London, Generating Genius is designed to develop higher standards of education in the areas of medicine and research science among boys in Jamaica and the UK.
Over the next five years, the boys will enroll in the residential summer schools based in one of the partner universities,where they will be treated as medical students and taught courses by university lecturers.
Professor Rainford Wilks receives Centennial Award
Head of the Epidemiology Research Unit at the Tropical Medicine Research Institute, Professor Rainford Wilks, has been presented with the Centennial Award for outstanding contribution to medical research by the Rotary Club of New Kingston.
Professor Wilks was recognized for his work on chronic diseases, especially diabetes, hypertension and HTLV-1, as part of the Rotary Club’s 110 years of service to humanity.
Medical Sciences Faculty invites submission of Abstracts
Abstracts are invited for oral and poster presentations at the Faculty of Medical Sciences Annual Research Conference to be held from November 16 to 18. The opening ceremony and Sir Kenneth Standard Distinguished Lecture will take place on the 16th at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. The research conference is on the 17th and a workshop entitled, “Clinical Trials” will take place on Friday the 18th

Dr. Maureen Samms Vaughn launches book on Early Childhood
Senior Lecturer in Child Health at the UWI Mona Campus, Dr. Maureen Samms Vaughn, has recently published a new book entitled, “Profiles – The Jamaica Pre-School Child, the Status of Early Childhood development in Jamaica”. The book was launched at the Planning Institute of Jamaica.
The University of the West Indies, Mona regrets the passing of Senior Lecturer and former Head of the Department of Physics, Dr. Patrick Chin. Dr. Chin has served the University for 35 years and retired in 2004.
We extend condolences to his family friends and past colleagues.
The funeral service for Dr. Chin will be held at the UWI Chapel on Wednesday July 27 at 10.00 a.m.
There will not be an academic procession and accordingly no gowns and hoods should be worn.
