CARIMAC graduates receive Jamaica Broilers Fair Play Awards

Three graduates of the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC), University of the West Indies, Mona, Patricia Watson, Leonardo Blair and Trudy Simpson, received first prize in the Print Media Category at the Jamaica Broilers Fair Play Awards Ceremony recently held at the Hilton Kingston hotel. The award-winning piece was a 10-part series published in the Gleaner on “Children infected and affected by HIV and AIDS”. The graduates captured the prize ahead of 15 other entrants.
CARIMAC Print and Online Journalism Class of 2004/2005 received a special award for the outstanding work they did on the CARIMAC Times magazine under the theme “Sexuality and Rights”. CARIMAC Times magazine is an annual publication done by print and online journalism class as a final product. This year’s publication was described by judges as “well produced, concise and very informative” and “a compilation of well-written articles - intelligently textured, with excellent research data”.
The Jamaica Broilers Fair Play Awards which seeks to encourage excellence in journalism, was established five years ago and has been receiving an increasing number of entries each year.
Recent graduate, Kerry-Kaye McCatty received a scholarship to pursue a Masters in journalism at the University of Illinois from the Jamaica Broilers Group. The scholarship is awarded to a Jamaican student studying print journalism who has excelled in the field.
