Bilingual Education Project

The Jamaican Language Unit in the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy at the UWI Mona Campus is now engaged in a Bilingual Education Project, which is aimed at increasing literacy among elementary school children in three project schools. The overall goal of the project is to achieve improved performance and competence in Maths, Science and Social Studies as well as fluency in Language use of Jamaican and English. The project, which is in its second year, has been approved by the Ministry of Education, and involves the training of 48 teachers in the speaking, reading, writing and comprehension of Jamaican and English. Existing texts for Language Arts, Science, Maths and Social Studies for grades one to four are also being translated into Jamaican for use in the project. Lead researcher on the project is Professor of Linguistics and Head of the Jamaican Language Unit, Hubert Devonish. The Unit has also completed an extensive island wide survey of language attitudes in Jamaica, the results of which will be released shortly.
