Public Forum on Language Attitudes
The Jamaica Language Unit at the UWI Mona Campus will host a Public Forum on Language Attitudes in Jamaica on Monday, November 21 in the Multi-functional Room of the UWI Main Library, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The forum is entitled "We Jamiekan Piipl Tingk Bout Langwij" and will provide an opportunity for discussing the results of the recent islandwide survey conducted by the Unit. Among the results to be discussed are issues related to the bilingual nature of the Jamaican language situation, the uses of Jamaican in the private and public domains, the prospect of legislating official status for Jamaican, how speakers of Jamaican and English are perceived, and opinions about Jamaican as a formal language of learning and teaching in schools. Interested persons are invited to attend.
