UWI STUDENT WINS OAS ESSAY COMPETITION

Lesley Ann Dixon, a graduate student currently pursuing the MSc. in Management of Information Systems at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus was named winner for the Caribbean region in an essay competition organized by the Organization of American States (OAS). She was one of five students from around the hemisphere to have won the essay competition on the theme of the Fourth Summit of the Americas which was hosted by the OAS in Mar del Plata, Argentina on November 4 and 5, 2005. The winning essays focused on "Creating Jobs to Fight Poverty and Strengthen Democratic Governance" which was the central theme of the Summit.

The essay competition was open to university students from the 34 member states of the OAS and was structured on a regional basis as follows:- North America, Central America, Caribbean, Andean Region, and MERCOSUR. Lesley Ann’s essay, entitled "Lessons Based on Intra and Extra Regional Experiences" was adjudged winner for the Caribbean region.

The competition was part of the activities leading up to the Summit which was attended by Heads of State and Governments in the region. The objective was to encourage youth of the western hemisphere to reflect on the challenges facing the region and to develop concrete proposals to address them.

Lesley Ann and the four other winners, were invited to attend the OAS Summit held in Argentina to accept the award and participate as observers in the Summit.
