Medical Class of 2008
Members of the Class of 2008 in the UWI’s Faculty of Medical Sciences recently donated nearly half a million dollars to three local charities at a ceremony held in the Physiology Lecture Theatre at the UWI Mona Campus. The donations were presented to Rural Services for Children with Disabilities, a non-government organization which provides community based intervention, rehabilitation and other services for over 600 students in six rural parishes; the university hospital’s Department of Medical Social Work and Leukemia Care, an organization which aims to provide financial, educational and psychosocial support to leukemia patients and their families. The students also took the opportunity to launch the Kevin Wilson memorial fund in tribute to one of their classmates who died in their first year. Those funds will be used to provide assistance for needy medical students. The contributions to the charities represented the proceeds from the students’ Annual Smoker, a variety concert which showcases the talent of the medical students.
