Professor Fay Durrant Elected Vice President IFAP
Head of the Department of Library and Information Studies, Professor Fay Durrant, has been elected Vice President of the Intergovernmental Council for the United Nations Education, Science and Cultural Organization’s Information for All Programme (IFAP). Professor Durrant was elected to the position by the representatives of the Council’s 26 Member States who met in Paris from March 20 -23. The information for all programme (IFAP) was established in 2000, when UNESCO’s Member States pledged to harness the new opportunities of the information age to create equitable societies through better access to information. The IFAP Council is responsible for guiding the programme, which aims to narrow the gap between the information rich and poor and to build an information society for all. Professor Durrant, who has been Chair of the Information Committee of the Jamaica National Commission for UNESCO, represents the group of countries composed of Jamaica, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. She has some 38 years experience in the library and information sector and has played a leading role in Latin America and the Caribbean, in the development of information policies and strategies and in the use of interactive communication technologies particularly the Internet. She will serve as Vice President of the Council for two years.
