2007 International Fulbright Science and Technology Award for Outstanding Foreign Students

The Office of Sponsored Research would like bring to your attention information regarding a new 2007 International Fulbright Science and Technology Award for Outstanding Foreign Students. This is a worldwide competition for 2007 to select top Science and Technology Ph.D. participants eligible for study at prestigious U.S. institutions.
The International Fulbright Science and Technology award, designed to be among the most prestigious international scholarships in science and technology, is for Ph.D. study at top U.S. institutions in science, technology, or engineering. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C. For this first year, approximately 25 awards will be competed worldwide for candidates who demonstrate unique aptitude and innovation in scientific fields.
Eligible fields include:
Aeronautics and Astronomics/ Aeronautical Engineering, Astronomy/ Planetary Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Sciences/Engineering, Engineering (electrical, chemical, civil, mechanical, ocean, and petroleum),Environmental Science/Engineering, Geology/Earth and Atmospheric, Sciences Information Sciences/Engineering, Materials Sciences/Engineering, Mathematics, Neuroscience/Brain and Cognitive Sciences, Oceanography, Physics.
The U.S. Department of State will fund grants for up to three years for this competition. All grantees will receive tuition, a monthly stipend for up to 36 months, health and accident coverage, a book and equipment allowance, research allowance, professional conference allowance, travel support and specially tailored enrichment activities. After three years, U.S. universities will be expected to cover the remaining expenses toward completion of a Ph.D. The Institute of International Education (IIE) in New York will handle placement of students by identifying the appropriate U.S. universities for each finalist and submitting university applications on his/her behalf.
Applicants must be Jamaican citizens and will have completed a master’s degree before August 1, 2007. Applicants may access either the Interactive Word Format or the PDF version of the Science and Technology application at http://www.iie.org/fulbright/apps . Each applicant is required to submit a paper application to Mrs. Angella Harvey, the Embassy’s Cultural Affairs Specialist, in the Office of Public Affairs, NCB Towers (South), First Floor, 2 Oxford Road, Kingston 5, no later than Friday, August 18, 2006. Final interviews of pre-screened candidates will take place in the Office of Public Affairs on Monday, August 28, 2006. Only those persons who are selected after interviews will be required to complete an online application for submission to IIE.
A complete academic package includes the application form, academic transcripts, a letter of reference and supplemental forms. General Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and GRE Subject exams are required for final university admissions. If an applicant cannot submit a GRE score at the point of application due to testing access issues, he/she may submit the application without it. However, it will be critical that the applicant register for the GRE October general test and the GRE November subject test.
