The Julien Fédon Memorial Prize

The Grenada Centre of the University of the West Indies and the Institute for People’s Enlightenment have advised that the 2005 Julien Fédon Memorial Prize for Excellence in History has been awarded to Nsaka Sesepkekiu, of Antigua. He was the nominee of the Department of History at the St. Augustine Campus.
The owner of one of Grenada’s largest estates and owner of about 100 slaves in 1795, Julien Fédon abandoned his life as a slave owner to become leader of a movement to destroy the institution of chattel slavery and to free Grenada from British rule. The objective of the Julien Fédon Memorial Prize is to increase the awareness among Grenadians and people of the region of Fédon’s contribution to his homeland and the region.
