Department of Geography and Geology
The Department of Geography and Geology at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, Jamaica, in association with the Climate Change Research Group and the Developing Areas Research Group of the Royal Geographical Society/Institute of British Geographers, will be hosting a conference on Global Change and Caribbean Vulnerability: Environment, Economy and Society at Risk? at the University of the West Indies, Mona, from July 24 to 28, 2006. The conference will bring together researchers from geography and related disciplines in the natural and social sciences to share their views on the inter-related impacts of global change on Caribbean people, societies and landscapes. It is expected to make a substantial contribution to understandings of vulnerability in the Caribbean region, will provide an opportunity through field trips and discussions for participants to broaden their knowledge of this issue in the Jamaican context, and will facilitate the development of new and fruitful avenues for future work. Participants will be attending the conference from throughout the Caribbean and around the world, and will represent universities, governments, and non-governmental organisations. Confirmed speakers include Professor Janet Momsen (University of California, Davis), Professor Colin Clarke (University of Oxford), and Mr. Jeremy Collymore (Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency).
