Here are some hurricane terminologies that you should be familiar with.
HURRICANE TERMINOLOGIES:
ADVISORY: Advisories are messages issued by the Meteorological Office, concerning all Tropical Depressions, Tropical Storms and Hurricanes. An advisory gives details as to:
where the system is located ▪ its intensity ▪ its direction and ▪ speed of movement.
TROPICAL DEPRESSION: A Tropical Depression is a closed circulation of low atmospheric pressure, originating over tropical waters. It blows counter clockwise around a centre with wind speeds of less than 39 miles per hour.
TROPICAL STORM: A Tropical Storm is a closed circulation of low atmospheric pressure, originating over tropical waters. It blows counter clockwise around a centre with wind speeds ranging from 39 to 73 miles per hour.
HURRICANE WATCH: This is an advisory issued by the Meteorological Office to alert the public, emergency management and other cooperating agencies that conditions are favourable for a hurricane, or hurricane conditions, to influence a specific area within thirty six (36) hours. However, its occurrence is still uncertain.
HURRICANE WARNING: This is an advisory issued by the Meteorological Office to alert the public, emergency management and other cooperating agencies that a Hurricane is imminent or likely to occur in a specific area within twenty four (24) hours.
