The University of the West Indies to host Book Launch

August 1 7, 2006; Kingston, Jamaica: Distinguished Jamaican poet and historian Dr. Afua Cooper will do a reading from her most recent publications: ‘Copper Woman and Other Poems’ and ‘The Hanging of Angélique: The Untold Story of Canadian Slavery and the Burning of Old Montreal,’ on Thursday August 24, 2006, at 6:00p.m. at the Undercroft of the Senate Building, UWI, Mona. The public is invited to attend and admission is free.
Dr. Cooper, who teaches history at the University of Toronto, has done ground-breaking work in uncovering the hidden history of Black peoples in Canada. The Hanging of Angélique brilliantly explores the life and death of Marie-Joseph Angélique, a Portuguese-born Black slave woman, who was hanged in Montréal in 1734 for allegedly setting fire to the city. Since its publication in February 2006, Angélique has been reprinted twice and has become a national bestseller.
Dr. Cooper is a dynamic performer of her poetry and her latest CD, ‘Worlds of Fire: In Motion,’ has just been released. Essence magazine in its October 2005 issue recognize Afua Cooper as one of twenty-five (25) powerful women who are shaping the world. Dr. Cooper’s visit to Jamaica is hosted by the Institute of Caribbean Studies and the Department of Literatures in English, UWI, Mona.
