That Time In Foreign

The Institute of Caribbean Studies at the University of the West Indies, Mona, will be hosting a lecture series for semester I of the 2006-2007 academic year billed as “That Time In Foreign - Life Stories of Jamaican ‘England Returnees’. Professor Frederick Hickling launches the series with a talk entitled, “Even De John Crow Dem White” on Friday September 8, 2006 at 5:00p.m. in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona.
Jamaican popular wisdom asserts that England made black people mad. This enlightening lecture series challenges this stereotype, focusing on the experiences of a diverse group of Jamaicans who have all returned home sane after spending time in England. Not quite a jail sentence, that time in foreign created opportunities for personal development. It also revealed the profound challenges faced by Caribbean migrants who wrongly assumed that England was the promised motherland. In this revealing lecture series, speakers will analyse the impact on their lives of institutitonalised racism and various other facets of U.K. life.
Presenters include: A-d Ziko Simba (Performance poet, consultant), Mrs. Elaine Foster-Allen (Principal, Shortwood Teachers College), Dr. Beverley Bryan (Educator, UWI), Dr. John Small (Lecturer, Social Work Activist, UWI), Ms. Gerlin Bean (Community Development Activist), Mr. Cecil Gutzmore (Lecturer, UWI), Dr. Hilary Robertson-Hickling (Lecturer, UWI), Alvin ‘Brother Kojo’ Brown (Rastafari Seer and Activist), Mrs. Clover Graham (Attorney at Law, Lecturer, UTECH), Mr. Carlton Duncan (Retired Headmaster, Attorney at Law, businessman) and Dr. Wesley Morris (Biochemist, Life-coach)
The public is invited to attend this interactive series, coordinated by Cecil Gutzmore, lecturer in Caribbean Studies. Admission is free. Those who attend all the lectures will be issued with a certificate of participation.
