UWI Lecturer Presents at First Fulbright-Humphrey Alumni Speaker Series
The Jamaica Fulbright-Humphrey Alumni Association (JFHAA), in collaboration with the United States Embassy’s Office of Public Affairs, will host Dr. Dalip Ragoobirsingh as the guest speaker for the seminar “Diabetes & Folklore,” the first in the Fulbright-Humphrey Alumni Speaker Series. The event takes place at the Physiology Lecture Theatre, Basic Medical Sciences, University of the West Indies, Mona on Tuesday, November 21 at 5:30 p.m.. The Diabetes Association of Jamaica (DAJ) will also provide free diabetes, eye and blood pressure screening on site from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This seminar is open to the public. Refreshments will be served from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Dr. Dalip Ragoobirsingh is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI, Mona and Consultant to the UWI Diabetes Outreach Project whose doctoral thesis on ‘Malnutrition Related Diabetes Mellitus’, was also honored as the Most Outstanding Academic in Research Award. He was later a Rhodes Research Scholar at the Human Diabetes and Metabolism Research Centre, Department of Medicine, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Additionally, he has been a visiting Fellow at the Mayo Medical School, Minnesota and visiting Professor at the University of Pittsburgh and the Miami School of Medicine, USA. Most recently Dr. Ragoobirsingh was a Fulbright Scholar attached to the Non-communicable Diseases Unit of the Pan American Health Organization Headquarters, Washington, USA, where he developed a Diabetes Education Curriculum for Caribbean Health Care Professionals. He is a member of several distinguished professional societies and the author of several publications on the metabolic and molecular aspects of diabetes which have been presented at conferences worldwide. He is the Chairman of the JFHAA Activities Committee.
Jamaicans who have been the recipients of Fulbright awards are members of the JFHAA, whose mission is to contribute to national development by initiating and participating in activities that foster advancement in education and the development of a civil society. The Fulbright Program supports educational exchanges that strengthen understanding and communication between the U.S. and over 140 countries.
