UWI Athletes Receive Awards
In an effort to enhance sports on campus, the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus awarded ten (10) accommodation grants to student-athletes who have excelled academically while representing the University in various sporting activities over the past academic year. At the recently held Ceremony, grants totalling $700,000.00 were awarded; with recipients receiving grants ranging from $43,960.00 to $81,012.00. The funds will cover the fees for the hall of residence for the student.
In making the presentation to the students, Deputy Principal, Joseph Pereira, highlighted the importance of sport in the lives and development of students on the Campus, and challenged the awardees to maintain their high academic standard, while they continue to excel in their sporting endeavours.
Under the University’s Strategic Transformation Plan, there are plans to reinvigorate the sporting culture on campus. This initiative is being led by Student Services Manager – Sports, Miss Grace Jackson O.D., and Coordinator of the Sport Enhancement Project, Mr. Richard Toomer. This transformation will be focused in the short term on the offerings to student-athletes and the upgrading of sporting facilities; and in the long term, a comprehensive re-development of the Mona Bowl with expanded international standard facilities.
