UWI Press Wins Book Awards

Three UWI Press books won awards at the 9th Biennial Book Industry Association of Jamaica Book Awards ceremony recently. B.W. Higman’s Plantation Jamaica: Capital and Control in the Colonial Economy received the Best Academic Book Award, 2006. The judge’s citation read:
“Plantation Jamaica brings into play its authour’s knowledge of the West Indian historiography, and grasp of geography and history of penmanship. It is magisterial in its breadth of topic and comparisons, and in its explanations of the minutiae of eighteenth and nineteenth century issues of plantation management and civil administration. It also enters knowledgeably into the polemics of the functionality or dysfunctional of the attorney and the absentee proprietor, and the nuances of the possible relationships between these two. A generous page size and margins enhance the quality of the book, together with its clear photographs and maps…”
Higman’s book emerged leader in all relevant categories.
