Launch of the Centre for Leadership and Governance

The Launch of the Centre for Leadership and Government, a collaborative enterprise between the Faculty of Social Sciences and Mona School of Business will take place on Wednesday, January 31 at 6:00 p.m. at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. His Excellency, the Most Honourable Kenneth Hall, Governor General of Jamaica will bring remarks at the Launch.
An important feature of the Launch will also be a report on the main findings of a path-breaking survey conducted by the Centre on prevailing attitudes and values among Jamaican people on critical issues of leadership of government. Areas of focus in the survey include: democratic versus authoritarian government in dealing with crime and violence, preferences regarding market driven or state centred solutions to development and current levels of confidence in national and political institutions such as the church, bank, armed forces, political parties and parliament.
The Centre was developed as a result of intensive discussions on the Campus of ways of enhancing the University’s response to national and regional needs and deepening the relevance and quality of UWI’s teaching, research and learning experience. It is aimed at playing a significant role in strengthening Transformational Leadership and Democratic Governance in Jamaica and other CARICOM countries through policy relevant research, publications and multi- dimensional engagements.
