A Historical Study of Women in Jamaica, 1655-1844 Launched
The University of the West Indies Press in association with the Centre for Gender and Development, Mona Unit and the Jamaica Bicentenary Committee will host the launch of the book “A Historical Study of Women in Jamaica, 1655-1844” on Wednesday, March 14 at 6:00 pm at the UWI Press Building. The book is authored by Lucille Mathurin Mair and edited and introduced by Hilary McD. Beckles, Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal, UWI, Cave Hill and Verene Shepherd, Professor of Social History, UWI, Mona.
The book details the study of women in Jamaica in the first 140 years of British colonization. Mathurin Mair is a widely known Jamaican historian, author, teacher and gender activist, diplomat and taught at the University of the West Indies. She has also represented Jamaica at the United Nations.
