Erna Brodber’s Latest Novel - The Rainmaker’s Mistake

The Department of Literatures in English, UWI, Mona, in association with West Indian Association of Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies (WIACLALS), and the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, launches The Rainmaker’s Mistake, the fourth novel by acclaimed Jamaican writer, Erna Brodber. The Launch takes place on Wednesday, May 16 at 6.00 pm, at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts.

The publication of The Rainmaker’s Mistake (New Beacon) is particularly timely as Jamaica marks the Bicentenary of the Abolition of the Atlantic Slave Trade. The writer explains the challenges addressed in this new novel, which focuses on the post-Emancipation period: “We watch the formerly enslaved as they try to handle freedom, and as they arrive at understandings concerning the issues and processes relating to their diaspora, settlement and stunted growth.”

Dr. Brodber is a freelance lecturer and most recently a guest Lecturer in Creative Writing in the Department of Literatures in English. She was awarded a Gold Musgrave Medal in 1999 and in 2006 she became the first Jamaican recipient of the international Prince Claus Award.

The University community and the public are invited to the Launch.
