In keeping with the UWI’s community outreach activities, a team from the Electronics Unit completed the repair of an ultrasound machine which was urgently needed to serve the community of Morant Bay. The machine is one of the two, owned by the only radiology imaging service in the parish of St. Thomas and which also serves patients of the Princess Margaret Hospital as well as patients from several communities in Portland.

Dr. Sharon Earl Edwards, Consultant Radiologist who is the only specialist in the field serving within the parish for over ten years, has expressed overwhelming gratitude to the Electronics Unit for their assistance which has enabled hundreds of patients on a waiting list to now have access to the service.

Recently, the Electronics Unit was also instrumental in giving expert service to the Bustamante Hospital for Children where the Team, headed by Dr. Paul Aiken urgently undertook the repair of an Autoclave, which facilitated the re-offering of open-heart surgery. The Bustamante Hospital has acknowledged the skill and innovation of the UWI team which is also responsible for the much needed repair of Bed-warmer and an Infant Ventilator for neonatal patients.
