The University of the West Indies is deeply saddened at the passing of Mrs. Audrey Chambers, Senior Librarian, Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), on Thursday July 5 and extends condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.

Mrs. Chambers was a long serving member of the University having joined the Library in January 1969 and was assigned to the Acquisitions Section and later became Head of the Cataloguing Section upon her resignation in 1985. She rejoined the staff of UWI in 1989, and assumed the position of Project Coordinator of an IDRC Project at the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER), where she was instrumental in automating the catalogue of the Documentation Centre using Micro CDS/ISIS, thus producing the first automated library catalogue at Mona. At the completion of this project, she was appointed Librarian of the ISER Documentation Centre, now the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES). During this period she worked on many projects including the re-organisation of the facilities of the Centre, training of library staff, and streamlining of the services offered. She also taught at the Department of Library and Information Studies at Mona.

She was a member of the Jamaica Library Association now Library and Information Association of Jamaica (LIAJA) serving on the Executive and as secretary in 1977 and 1978. She was Chairperson of the Information Technology Working Party, served on the Jamaica National Commission for UNESCO’s Advisory Committee on Information and Communication, and the National Library of Jamaica Digitization Committee.

The Thanksgiving service for the life of Audrey Chambers will be on Saturday, July 21 at 10 am at the University Chapel, UWI, Mona
