“Facing the Challenges of Nursing through Research”

“Facing the Challenges of Nursing through Research” is this year’s theme for the annual Nursing Midwifery Research Conference and Mary Seivwright Day hosted by the UWI School of Nursing, Mona (UWISON). The event takes place on May 29-30 at the Rex Nettleford Hall Multipurpose Room, UWI, Mona Campus.

Dr. Sharon Cumbie, Distinguished Professor and Clinical Nurse Specialist, will give the keynote address at the conference and deliver the Distinguished Research Lecture on Mary Seivwright Day. Among her most recent appointments, Dr. Cumbie was Professor and Division Head, Psychiatric – Mental Health Nursing at The Japanese Red Cross Hiroshima College of Nursing, Japan and Assistant Professor and Research Scientist, College of Health Sciences Center for Rural Health Research and Education, University of Wyoming. A recipient of the Jean Watson Award for Vision in Human Caring, she specializes in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing, and is a widely published author on the science of caring.

Dr. Suzan Hagedorn, Associate Professor Emeritus, University of Colorado at Denver School of Nursing, Colorado will explore practical application of the theory of caring to nursing practice at the conference.

Additionally, an exhibition on the contribution of Dr. the Honourable Mary Seivwright, OJ., first West Indian Director of the Advanced Nursing Education Unit (ANEU), to nursing education will be mounted at the conference to mark the 60th Anniversary of the UWI.

The conference is designed to expose faculty, students, nurses and midwives across the Caribbean region to international expertise in research and its application to improve patient care.
