Re-Introduced Taxi Policy

The UWI Mona Taxi Policy will be re-introduced from May 19, 2008. The Taxi Policy is designed to enhance the safety and security of staff, students and visitors on the Mona Campus, as well as reduce disregard for traffic regulations. The main features of the policy are:

  1. Only authorized taxis will be allowed to offer service on the Mona Campus. The Campus will liaise with the Police to ensure that only authorized operators are allowed on the campus. The Police will vet each such vehicle, driver and owner. These taxis will each have a numbered sticker displayed on their windscreen.
  2. The only taxi operators authorized to offer services on the Mona Campus are Corporate Area Taxi Association, JUTA and a selected number of identified (stickered) taxis from Express Taxi Service, Candy Cab Limited, Jamaica Taxi Service and the Jamaica Association of Hackney Carriers.
  3. Staff, students and visitors to the Campus using other taxis will not be allowed access beyond the gates; therefore alternative arrangements will have to be made for transportation from the gates to their destination on Campus.
  4. Arrangements can be made at the gates for staff, students and visitors to the Campus to contact the Corporate Area Taxi Association if necessary to transport them (for regular fees) to their destination on campus.
  5. The shuttle bus service on the campus passes by the Post Office and Irvine Hall gates and is available to UWI staff and students to be transported around the Campus. The frequency of this shuttle is being increased. After 8 pm nightly the Escort Service is available and may be contacted to safely transport staff and students to their destinations on campus. The Escort Service may be contacted at 935-8748/935-8749 or extensions 2748/ 2749 or with the help of the guards at the gates.
  6. A Corporate Area Taxi Association dispatcher can be reached at 899-8846 and 489-1884.
  7. A regular updated list of authorized taxis will be made available to the campus community via e-mail, notice boards and fliers.
  8. Staff members who have special cases with respect to other taxi operators are asked to contact Dr. Steve Weaver at steve.weaver@uwimona.edu.jm. You are also asked to refer any complaints and suggestions regarding the authorized operators to Dr. Steve Weaver.
  9. Chartered taxis allowed to operate on the Mona Campus are to provide such services within the price range of off campus taxi operators.
  10. White plate/illegal taxis are not allowed on the University of the West Indies, Mona campus.
  11. Students who so wish can continue to use other taxis up to (or from) the gates.
  12. The UWI Mona Campus is not responsible for the operations of Corporate Area Taxi Association or other companies, and does not assume responsibility for use of the authorized taxis.
