On July 21, 2008 The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus through the Sports Office kicked off the inaugural staging of the UWI Summer Football Mania, appropriately themed "Unearthing Talent". With almost 40 campers in attendance daily, the two-week camp proved to be highly competitive and provided an opportunity for the campers to refine their football skills and learn new ones.

The annual UWI Memorial Shield Football tournament culminates the Football Mania where top teams in the island will participate in high level matches as preparation for the upcoming football season and as a reward for their excellent play last season. Participating athletes will also have the opportunity to vie for a University Sports Scholarship through the tournament which takes place on Saturday, August 2, 2008 at 9 am at the UWI Mona Bowl. Schools taking part in the tournament include the semifinalists from the DaCosta Cup and Manning Cup Competitions in 2007 such as Kingston College, Jamaica College, Bridgeport Comprehensive High School, Glenmuir High, Rusea’s Comprehensive High School, Cornwall College and Garvey Maceo.
