July-at-the-UWI 2008 goes to Barbados and Antigua
The twelfth July-at-the-UWI programme for children ages 12 to 18 years was successfully delivered recently. The focus of this year’s programme was The Environment, and as usual, the science was enriched with aspects of the history and culture of countries which contribute to the UWI. Module 1 was based at the UWI, Mona campus and involved courtesy calls, interviews, field visits and recreational trips in Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Ann. Module II was delivered in Barbados and St. Lucia. The philosophy of the programme includes exposure to the UWI as a regional institution and encouraging the choice of the UWI as the institution for tertiary level education.
Familiarization tours of the Mona and Cave Hill campuses as well as the UWI Open Campus site in St. Lucia were part of this year’s programme. Visits in Jamaica included the UWI house at Bellevue, the mountainous areas of Flamstead and the Mt. Airy watershed area in the St. Andrew Hills, The UWI’s Marine Laboratory at Port. Royal, Scientific Research Council, Liberty Hall and National Heroes’ Park. In Barbados the tours included Harrison’s Cave, the coral reefs viewed from the Atlantis submarine, the computerized Four Square Rum Distillery and Heritage Park. The St. Lucia leg of the programme included visits to the Soufriere Sulphur Springs, Pigeon Island National Park and the fishing village of Anse La Raye. Courtesy calls and interviews were hosted by the Governor General of Jamaica, the Principal of Mona Campus, the University Registrar, the Deputy Principal of Cave Hill Campus and the Head of the Open Campus site in St. Lucia.
