Walter Rodney Conference
The University of the West Indies, Mona through the Institute of Caribbean Studies, Centre for Caribbean Thought, the Guild of Students in collaboration with and the Africana Studies Department at Brown University has organized the historic Walter Rodney Conference on October 16-18, 2008 at the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona. The Conference will mark the 40th anniversary of the organized student protests in Jamaica that were occasioned by the banning of Walter Rodney from Jamaica.
The highlight of the Conference will be the 10th annual Walter Rodney Lecture scheduled for Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 6 pm. The Lecture will be delivered by Professor Patricia Rodney, widow of Walter Rodney. The Conference continues with presentations exploring the legacy and contribution of Walter Rodney and his work. Topics being addressed at the Conference include: Student Activism in the Contemporary Caribbean; Grassroots Journalism; Rodney, Revolution and Popular Music; Gendering Black Power; and Oral Histories of the Rodney Protests.
