UWI School of Nursing, Mona (UWISON) Awards Ceremony

The UWI School of Nursing, Mona (UWISON) will host the Awards Ceremony for the winners of a Logo and Theme/Title competition on October 28, 2008, at 2:00 pm at the UWISON Lecture Theatre.  The Competition is an activity of the Jamaican Mother-Daughter HIV Risk-Reduction research/intervention project of the UWISON in collaboration with the New York University College of Nursing and the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.  The project also involves partnering with a number of local community-based organizations (CBOs) such as the Women’s Centre of Jamaica Foundation, Children First, YMCA, YWCA, Girl Guides Association, Stony Hill Heart Academy, LEAP Centre – HEART/NTA, and Faith Cathedral Deliverance Centre.

Students from the CBOs were invited to participate in a competition to create a logo and theme/title related to the project. This was done to encourage initiative, creativity, and culturally relevant illustrations, enable ownership among the adolescents and to encourage wider participation/contribution of the CBOs involved in this project.

This research/intervention project which spans a four (4) year period, from 2007 to 2011, is designed to develop and test effective, culturally sensitive, theory-based, mother-daughter HIV risk reduction intervention.  It is expected that a reduction in adolescent girls’ sexual risk behaviours and improvement in mothers’ monitoring and sexual communication associated with reduced adolescent sexual risk taking will result.
