"The UWI Glass Ceiling: Splinters, Cracks and Scratches"
"The UWI Glass Ceiling: Splinters, Cracks and Scratches", is the title of the sixth biennial Lucille Mathurin Mair Public Lecture being hosted by the Centre for Gender and Development Studies, Mona Unit, UWI. The Lecture takes place on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at 5:00 pm at the Multifunctional Room, Main Library, UWI, Mona. Professor Elsa Leo-Rhynie, Professor Emerita, former Principal, PVC and the first Regional Coordinator of the CGDS will deliver the Lecture.
The Lecture honours Dr. Lucille Mathurin Mair, who founded the Centre for Gender and Development Studies and was its first Coordinator. Ambassador Mair is a distinguished Jamaican diplomat, historian, senator and women's activist who has served Jamaica as Ambassador to Cuba, as Permanent Representative to the United Nations, as Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and as the first Director of the Women's Desk in Jamaica which later became the Bureau of Women's Affairs. It is also part of the UWI's 60th Anniversary Celebrations and will examine the contribution of women to the UWI during its 60-year history.
