Research Day 2009

Research Day 2009 will take place at the UWI, Mona Campus January 29-30, 2009 under the theme, “Information Communication Technologies (ICT): Enabling Cutting Edge Research. Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Hon. Bruce Golding, will be the guest speaker at the Opening Ceremony which will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 9 am at the Undercroft. The annual Research Day will highlight the groundbreaking research being conducted by members of the academic community at Mona and allow members of the public to interact with many of the award-winning individuals whose work will be on display.

Over the two days, visitors will be able to view over 100 booths mounted in the Assembly Hall and in the tent next to the Undercroft of the Senate Building. Tours will be conducted throughout the Faculties of Humanities & Education, Medical Sciences, Pure & Applied Sciences and Social Sciences which will be hosting Open Days. In addition, cultural and heritage tours of the Mona Campus will take place to introduce persons to its rich and varied past.

Other activities over the period include the annual AFJ/Sue Cobb lecture to be delivered by Dr. Herbert Gayle, lecturer, Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work. His lecture is “The Potholed Road Ahead: Examining Solutions to Reduce the Murder Rate in Jamaica.” It takes place on Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 5:30 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona. The Lecture is being organized by the University of the West Indies, Mona in association with the Jamaica Fulbright - Humphrey Alumni Association and the American Friends of Jamaica.

There will also be lunch hour concerts on both days, a breakfast forum focusing on the theme for Research Day, and a ceremony on Friday, January 30 at which awards will be given to outstanding researchers.
