UWI Press Authors Get Awards
The University of the West Indies Press was the youngest and newest publisher of the thirty publishers named in the group of prestigious Professional and Scholarly Excellence (PROSE) winners and finalists awarded for publishing excellence. B. W. Higman, Jamaican Food: History, Biology, Culture was awarded Honorable Mention and Finalist status by the Association of American Publishers for PROSE Awards in the category of Archaeology and Anthropology. The fifteen-judge panel included publishing professionals, librarians and academics from universities such as the University of Toronto, New York University and Columbia University. The judges made their decisions after reviewing a record-breaking 439 entries from 60 professional and scholarly publishers. Award-winning publishers included Harvard University Press, Oxford University Press, and Yale University Press and large commercial houses such as Elsevier and Wiley-Blackwell.
Kathleen E. A. Monteith, Depression to Decolonization: Barclays Bank (DCO) in the West Indies, 1926-1962, was awarded the Principal’s Award for Best Publication in the Faculty of Humanities and Education 2007-2008, University of the West Indies, Jamaica.
The Press will publish a new book edited by Kathleen E. Monteith and B. W. Higman about West Indian business history in 2010.
