Research Symposium
The Department of Government, UWI, Mona in collaboration with University of Bordeaux-University Antilles-Guyane Cooperation Programme will host a Research Symposium titled, “Problems of Categorization in Creole Societies: Heritage, Appropriation, Innovation”. The Symposium takes place on Monday, April 20, 2009 starting at 9 am at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre (SSLT).
Topics being explored at the Symposium include: “Voodoo: as a key issue in the (de)construction of Haitian society?”, “How to tell a Colonial Past at the Museum today? Producing a Legitimate Narrative about the Colonial Past in Belgium” and “Social Conflicts, Identity-Building and the Process of Ethnicization of Social Relationships in Martinique”. Presenters at the Symposium are: Dr. Christine Chivallon, Senior Researcher at the Centre d’Afrique Noir and also affiliated with the Institut d’Etudes Politiques of the University of Bordeaux IV, Professor Jean Marie Theodat of the Institut d’Etudes Politiques, University of Paris I, Dr. Aurelie Roger of the University Antilles-Guyane, Professor Justin Daniel, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Economics, University Antilles-Guyane, Professor Verene Shepherd and Dr. Matthew Smith both of UWI, Mona.
