“Jamaica for Sale"
“Jamaica For Sale” by Esther Figueroa and Diana McCaulay is the title of the documentary being shown as part of the Film Series organized by the UWI Cultural Programme Committee in association with the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work at UWI, Mona. The showing takes place on Friday, April 24, 2009 at 6 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1).
The documentary is a 92 minute video highlighting disturbing issues behind the island's tourism industry. Professor Ian Boxill at the UWI, Mona describes the film as “present (ing) a critical account of contemporary Jamaican tourism and boldly ventures beyond the idyllic images of an island paradise, depicted in numerous travel brochures and television advertisements, exposing the underbelly of an industry beset by serious social and environmental challenges. Sobering and riveting, this documentary is a must see for all those who love Jamaica and care about creating a sustainable tourism industry."
The university community and the public are invited. Admission is free.
