Caribbean Culture and Media

The University of the West Indies, through the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC), Mona and the International Programmes Unit, Office of Administration, is partnering with Clark Atlanta University (CAU) to stage the inaugural Caribbean Culture and Media Conference. The conference themed, New Technologies: Media and Communication in a Cultural Context takes place from July 6-8, 2009 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona.

Local and overseas presenters will share at the Conference on topics including the Convergence of Politics, Culture and Media; Converged Media and Caribbean History; New Media Technologies and Visual Storytelling.

The conference begins Monday, July 6 with presentations by Acting Director of CARIMAC, Dr. Canute James, Professor James McJunkins, Assistant Professor, Mass Media Arts at Clark Atlanta University and Director of the CAU Jamaica Study Abroad Program, and Lecturer in the Department of Government at the UWI, Mona, Dr. Clinton Hutton.

Other presenters over the three-day conference will include Dr. Hopeton Dunn, Director, Telecommunications Policy Management Programme, Mona School of Business, UWI; media personality, Fae Ellington, who will address the Conference Plenary Roundtable session on Convergence and the Survival of Mass Media in the 21st Century, and Dr. Alice Stephens, Associate Professor, Mass Media Arts, at Clark Atlanta University, who is also Co-Coordinator of the Conference. There will also be a student panel as part of the conference proceedings in which two CARIMAC students and two Mass Media Arts students from CAU will share.
