Opening of a New Magnetic Resonance Imaging Unit

The University Hospital of the West Indies opened a new Magnetic Resonance Imaging Unit (MRI) on Tuesday, December 10.  The Governor General of Jamaica, the Most Hon. Sir Howard Cooke opened the facility during his annual tour of the Hospital.  The Unit has been operating since January this year and has facilitated 823 examinations.  These have provided physicians with layered images of the body for use in diagnosis of conditions such as brain tumors, spinal disorders, muscular/skeletal disorders and cardiac disease.  It also allows doctors to look inside organs and bone structures that they would otherwise be unable to see without surgery.  The opening of the new MRI Unit is part of The Hospitals’ 50th anniversary celebrations. The UCHWI began its operations as the clinical arm of the then University College of the West Indies and continues in that role for the University of the West Indies.
