'Gender Equality, Sociobiology & Corporate Governance'

The Faculty of Law at UWI, Mona will host a public Lecture as part of the Research day activities on Friday, January 29, 2010 at 10 am at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona. The Lecture is titled, 'Gender Equality, Sociobiology and Corporate Governance’. Dr. Kólá Abímbólá, lecturer in Company and Commercial law at the University of Leicester, UK will deliver the lecture. The lecture is also the first lecture in the Mona Law Series.
The presentation will examine the thesis that human behaviour, including behaviour in the corporate world, is more biologically influenced than previously assumed. Specifically, it will explore the roles, effects and imports of gender in Corporate Governance and accountability. The central thesis is that statutory regulation alone is not enough: human behaviour, including behaviour in the corporate world, has very much been shaped by the same forces of natural selection that has moulded and constructed the behaviour of all other animals. Legislators, corporations and policy makers, therefore, need to factor socio-biology into their Corporate Governance strategies. The Lecture will include lessons from the recent banking crash of 2008 and the reactions of governments to introduce more regulation and 'radical' changes in monetary policies.
The university community and the public are invited. For further information interested persons may contact Marjorie Henry, Faculty of Law at 927-1855 or 702-4392.
